Supreme Court ruling on Roe v. Wade

June 30, 2022

Statement from the WGS Program:

The recent Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade is a major setback in reproductive rights for people in the United States. This ruling sets off a complex array of bans and restrictions that affect people’s access to comprehensive and quality reproductive health care.

In general, the widespread and damaging fallout from this decision means that individual States will determine if and how women and pregnant people have access to abortion care.

According to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research President and CEO, Dr. C. Nicole Mason, “This is a dark day for American democracy and women’s reproductive rights. Today, the Supreme Court turned back the clock on nearly a half century of progress on gender equality.” https://iwpr.org/media/press-releases/scotus-overturns-roe-v-wade/

The Women’s and Gender Studies Program is sharing several information sources and resources about the Supreme Court decision for folks who are advocates, in need of services, or wish to expand their understanding of the economic, political, legal, and health impacts of restricting reproductive health care.

The WGS Program stands in support of all ISU students and the greater Iowa community in this challenging time, regardless of their identities or their position on the matter. Click HERE if you wish to know more about the WGS program and what we do.

We offer these resources as a beginning step. This decision is one that will have significant impact on already existing healthcare inequalities, and the scope of the public health effects will be large. Fallout from the Supreme Court ruling is also simultaneously institutional and deeply personal, and you may be grappling with many emotions. The field of Women’s and Gender Studies was born out of and thrives in the collective. Now is the time to invest in our communities and ourselves, to take care of one another, and to stand in solidarity with each other as we move forward, together.
