As the fall semester starts with flying colors, we often want to attend events to get a sense of community on campus. The Women’s and Gender Studies Program is excited to announce our upcoming lectures for our 2024-2025 Lecture Series! These events are funded by the Mellon Foundation’s Affirming Multivocal Humanities Grant, awarded to Dr. Winfrey and the WGS program in the fall of 2023.
3. Agitating and Organizing 101, Sally Kohn, Oct. 14, 2024, at 6:00 PM, Sun Room at the Memorial Union Sally Kohn is one of the leading progressive voices in America today. She is the author of The Opposite of Hate, Sally is a former political commentator for CNN and Fox News. Sally is a member of the board of contributors at USA Today and a regular contributor to Afar Magazine, among many other outlets. She is a highly sought-after media trainer and public speaking coach, and her three TED Talks have been viewed over six million times.
4. No Fashion Without Disability: Embracing as Knowledge and Access as an Aesthetic, Dr. Ben Barry, Nov. 11, 2024, at 6:00 PM, Sun Room at the Memorial Union Dr. Ben Barry is a fashion educator at the Parsons School of Design at The New School in New York. He’s devoted social justice, sustainability, accessibility, and equity to fashion. Ben’s research focuses on the production, consumption, management, and representation of fashion and explores the intersectional experiences of disabled, fat, trans, and queer individuals. Ben also leads the Pathways for Disabled Designers: Towards Systemic Inclusion in a Fashion research project in collaboration with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).
5. Trans Athletes and The Future of Sports, Nov. 13, 2024, at 6:00 PM, Lee Liu Auditorium at Howe Hall For the past several years– and during the Summer Olympics– the issue of trans athletes’ participation in sports has never been far from headlines. State legislatures, sports’ governing bodies, celebrities, and political leaders have all gotten involved, especially when discussing who can compete in girls’ and women’s sports. This will be a panel with 3-5 speakers.
